The sun shone down at Bicton Arena last week for an exciting Media Day for Bicton May International Horse Trials, which kicked off with scones and tea. Which comes first cream or jam?

Followed by a course drive on the ‘Bicton Safari Bus’ with husband and wife Course Designer Helen West and Event Director Andrew Fell – who are excitingly now taking over the full management of Bicton Arena.

It was great to be back in an eventing field with fellow equestrian media folk getting a sneak peek at the CCI2*- Long, CCI3* Young Rider- Long and CCI4* – Short ahead of Bicton’s May International Horse Trials. It’s a great opportunity to hear about the course from Helen West who was fresh back from America after building the XC course at Tyron International.

The 4* course was still having its final tweaks but looked great, with some new questions this year which will be exciting to see how it’s ridden – especially fence 6 the Mitchell & Webbe Oak Tree Turn – an oxer to corner on a downhill turn.

After such a wet start to the year, the ground felt fantastic at Bicton and will be a welcome relief to many riders who have had events cancelled this spring.

The event takes place from Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th May and is a great way to make the most of the Bank Holiday weekend in Devon.

So what do you need to know:

  • Tickets are £10 for Thursday and Friday, £20 for Saturday and Sunday and £50 for a family of 4. Tickets can be purchased at
  • Hiho Silver will be attending early in the week for the trot up to award the Best Dressed male and female – so stay tuned to their social channel @hihosilveruk for all the details. They will also have a stand their over the weekend – so make sure you pop by to say hello to King of the Road Andrew and the latest collection.
  • Potential eventing stars will be taking part in the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse Qualifier on Thursday.
  • Paris Olympic hopeful combinations – Laura Collett & London 52, Kitty King & Vendredi Biats, Ros Canter & Lordships Graffalo to name a few will be taking part in the 4* short – Sunday is XC for the 4* and will prove to be exciting. Bicton has some great viewing points to watch all the action.
  • Fresh from Badminton you can watch eventing names – Alex Bragg, William Fox-Pitt, Tim Price, Harry Meade as well as Kentucky riders – Oliver Townend, Yasmin Ingham and Tom McEwen – with other rides.
  • Check out the who’s who of eventing taking part over on the British Eventing website under ‘entries’ here.
  • Which day should you attend? Well if XC is your thing and you’d like to watch potential Olympic medallists – I’d go on Sunday to watch the 4* on the XC, however, Saturday will be plenty of action with the 2*L and 3*L & Young Riders going XC. You can check out the provisional timetable here
  • Is there anything for the non-horsey folk? There will be a mix of demonstrations and displays over the weekend and there’s even a Dog Show – find out more here.
  • Unable to attend but want to watch the action? Check out Clip My Horse TV here who will be live filming on Saturday and Sunday with commentator Ben King. (Clip My Horse TV do offer a free trial over on the website). And you can stay up to date with the live scores via Eventing Scores.
  • Follow @bicton_arena for all the action during the event.
